How Low is Too Low?

Can you please tell me how low your temperature has to be to be considered low? I called my Dr.’s office and the last 3 times I have been in, my temperature has been 97.1, 97.3, and 97.4. Would these temperatures be considered low body temperatures?

Thank You,
Linda

Answer *Those temperatures would definitely be low enough to explain symptoms of low body temperature. Typical WTS patients have temperatures of 97.8 or below. However, I have had many patients with temperatures only as low as 98.2 – 98.4 that responded well to the WT3 protocol.

All the best,

Denis Wilson, MD

I struggled with a chronic undiagnosed health condition for 30 years which I now believe to be Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome. My symptoms included fatigue, insomnia, night sweats, food reactions, itchy skin and a feeling that I was living on adrenaline. I consulted hundreds of doctors to no avail both in the mainstream and alternative fields. I was able to cope with my illness through diet (no caffeine, alcohol and refined carbohydrates), stress reduction, mild exercise, meditation and biofeedback techniques that increased my body temperature.

But despite my efforts my health deteriorated over the years, worsening after periods of stress until I developed a condition where my muscles were unable to recover from exertion without developing symptoms of overuse.A friend learned about Wilson’s on the internet and told me about it. As soon as I read about it I knew this was what I had been struggling with all along. My temperature was 95.9 when I was taking Armour with a TSH of 3. I started taking T3 in January of 2004 … I am now taking 97.5 mg. of T3 twice a day and feel much improved. No fatigue, better sleep, very calm and muscles improving but not 100%. My pulse ranges between 69 and 80 and my temperature ranges between 97.3 and 98.2 except for mid afternoon when it is always 98.6. I have been on the last 3 doses for about 3 weeks each. This is the best I have felt in 30 years! I have some important questions that I would like answered.

  • Should I continue to increase the amount of T3 until my temperature averages 98.6 even if I feel fine?
  • Will I eventually be able to take less T3 for my thyroid replacement or switch to T4? How will this be achieved?

I would really appreciate your response.
Thank you, D. Burns

Answer *There are two goals to treatment that don’t necessarily need to be achieved at the same time. The first is feeling well while on the WT3 protocol, and the second is remaining improved after discontinuing WT3. If while they’re on the WT3 protocol, patients notice that they are feeling very well (accomplishing the first goal), they could stay on that dose they are feeling well on even if their temperatures are still below normal. Particularly, if they are feeling extremely well and are losing weight…there may be some benefit in not rocking the boat and just staying on a certain dose for a while. On the other hand, it seems that patients are more likely to achieve the 2nd goal of remaining improved even after they have discontinued the WT3 if they are able to “punctuate” their temperatures all the way up to 98.6 before weaning. Hypothyroid patients who have responded well to the WT3 protocol are often able to transfer off the WT3 protocol and back onto the T4 containing medicine. Often, they are able to feel much better on less T4 than they ever did on much more T4 before the WT3 protocol. Chapter 12 of the Doctor’s Manual describes the process…or you can ask your doctor to call 800-420-5801 for free technical support.

Best Wishes,

Denis Wilson, MD

About the Author:

Denis Wilson, MD described Wilson 's Temperature Syndrome in 1988 after observing people with symptoms of low thyroid and low body temperature, yet who had normal blood tests. He found that by normalizing their temperatures with T3 (without T4) their symptoms often remained improved even after the treatment was discontinued. He was the first doctor to use sustained-release T3.

You could find suggestions on our website as to what you can try without a prescription. And it also has a list of physicians you can use to see if there’s a doctor in your area. Good luck :)
